Vermont Academic Detailing Program
THE VERMONT ACADEMIC DETAILING PROGRAM is a university-based prescriber education and support program. The Program is offered by the University of Vermont’s Office of Primary Care with funding from public and private sources, including the State of Vermont. There is no pharmaceutical company sponsorship associated with the Vermont Academic Detailing Program nor do the program faculty have any ties to the pharmaceutical industry. The faculty objectively review clinical topics, covering the latest evidence for lifestyle changes and generic medications in addition to the latest in medication releases. This information is shared with health care teams across Vermont.
The goal of the Vermont Academic Detailing Program is to promote high quality, evidence-based, patient-centered, and cost-effective treatment decisions by health care professionals.
We invite you to join our academic detailers for virtual academic detailing sessions and in person sessions. We will continue to offer virtual sessions on Zoom, which qualify for continuing education credits and are specifically designed to be delivered between one clinician and one academic detailer. This keeps the conversation focused and efficient.

"Management of Obesity"
This session highlights the practical aspects of managing obesity in primary care, with a focus on the available evidence‐base. This session includes information about epidemiology and related statistics, body mass index, obesity as a chronic illness, evidence for non-pharmacologic approaches, and discusses the risks and benefits of various medication options. The session also includes resources for patient education.
"Prevention and Management of Alcohol Use Disorder"
This session highlights the
practical aspects of preventing and managing alcohol use disorder in primary
care, with a focus on the available evidence‐base. This session includes
information about alcohol epidemiology and related statistics, prevention of
alcohol use disorder, diagnosis of alcohol use disorder, and discusses the
risks and benefits of various treatment options. The session also includes
resources for patient education.
"Management of Fibromyalgia" *
This topic includes reviewing the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, evaluating the evidence for non-pharmacologic management options, and discussing the pharmacologic approaches to management.
"Advanced Management of Opioids" *
This session highlights the practical aspects of managing patients prescribed opioids in primary care. This session includes reviewing the rules for both prescribing and querying the Vermont Prescription Monitoring System (VPMS). This session includes information about how to safely initiate and discontinue opioids in primary care.
"Management of Type 2 Diabetes"
This session highlights the new, non-insulin medications for managing patients with type 2 diabetes in primary care, with a focus on the available evidence‐base related to cardiac and other outcomes. This session also includes information about nutrition and lifestyle, insulin safety, and recommendations from the American Diabetes Association guidelines.
"Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)"
This session highlights the practical aspects of managing patients diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in primary care, with a focus on the available evidence‐base. This session includes information about medication therapies and a description of the various inhaler devices. The session also includes resources for patient education.
Scheduling and Other Important Information
These FREE programs offer prescribers CME credit to prescribers (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and naturopaths), pharmacists, and nurses, and can be scheduled as small group or one-on-one sessions in your office for any of these topics; we also offer "live" sessions virtually on Zoom. The role of the Program Advisor is to provide opinions and practical advice regarding the approach, direction, and operation of the Vermont Academic Detailing Program.
